The CHA Vancouver Island Racketlon was a resounding success. With 50 participants, the courts at Panorama Recreation were at capacity all weekend. Athletes came from across Western Canada to compete. There were a lot of first time players, many of which came from the local squash community. A contingent of 5 players in the 45+ division came over from Saltspring Island commuting back and forth on a ferry to make it to their matches. They kindly brought a gift basket of Saltspring Island Goat cheese and crackers which was much appreciated by the exhausted tournament organizers as the last matches wound down on Saturday. All newcomers got hooked on racketlon and are keen to play again. The favourite in the Mens A Elite was World #48 Evan Mancer. He played true to form and beat Peter Brix in the finals. In the Womens A Elite first seed Damaris Brix lost to 2nd seed Tarrin McDonough in a gummy arm tiebreaker. Damaris & Tarrin have competed against each other many times before and either one could win on a given day. It as evidently Tarrin’s turn to win this time! The Mens Elite Doubles went to father and son team Peter and Billy Brix who ousted top seeds Evan Mancer and Medhi Bahrami. Mixed doubles action saw Tarrin and her partner Karel Hrazdil beat Damaris and son Andrew Brix in the final. Tarrin completed her triple crown by winning the women’s doubles with partner Megan Yim. Congratulations also on a very strong showing for the Brix family! Four members of the Calder family competed, with Jack and Robert coming 3rd in the Mens A Elite Doubles. Brother and sister Zach and Megan Yim put up a good fight, and couple Byron and Abby Kidd are always a threat. Welcome to newcomers Darcy and Shelley Lawrence and all the other competitors who played racketlon for the first time. The athletes took advantage of on-court massage on Saturday, with some people going back for a 2nd treatment later in the afternoon. The players got together Saturday night at the Prairie Inn to relax and unwind after a long day of play. Very special thanks to Mary Jo Randall and Ron Jordan for running the draw desk and updating tournament software all weekend.
