Ottawa Racketlon 2012 Doubles action and a full 16-player Mens B draw kept everyone busy, especially on Saturday where matches played right up until 7:30pm! Fortunately that translated into a slightly less busy Sunday, so the finals finished a little earlier, which allowed the out-of-town players to hit the road at a reasonable hour. The Mens A final pitted Ottawa’s table tennis Olympian, Horatio Pintea, against top contender Jeremy Easterbrook from Montreal. It started as expected with Horatio winning the TT handily and Jeremy (formerly a top junior badminton player in Quebec) winning the badminton. Jeremy then displayed the fruits of his multi-sport racketlon training as he took the squash with a score that nullified his loss at TT, and went on to score the points he needed in tennis while in the lead, to take the match +11. Racketlon has hit the Rock! In the form of Darrell Chipp from Newfoundland who played in the Mens B division this year (he was already vacationing in Ottawa at the time of the tournament). He was in a nail-biter in the semis with Nicolas Grenapin – only down by 2 points going into tennis. Except the tennis courts were closed for the night, and his flight home was too early on Sunday to finish the match properly. He has vowed to return again and may even run his own racketlon, so keep watching the Racketlon Canada website for an event out east. In the Mens B final the former TT specialist now squash specialist Jamie Herman of Toronto came out of his racketlon hiatus to re-establish his position among the top players with a +20 win over Nicolas Grenapin from Ottawa. The Ladies draw saw newcomer Karen Li from Ottawa climb her way into the finals against perenial powerhouse Mary Hall from Toronto. Karen’s top-notch badminton served her well with a 21-6 victory, but it wasn’t enough against Mary who took the other three sports in commanding fashion for an overall win of +31. Congratulations to the following winners: Jeremy Easterbrook – Mens A Jamie Herman – Mens B Stan Singh – Mens C Mary Hall – Ladies Rod Bedard – Mens Over-45 Cedric Grenapin – Boys Under-16 Florence Grenapin – Girls Under-16 Francis Soucy / Horatio Pintea – Mens A Doubles Jamie Herman / Rob Edwards – Mens B Doubles Mary Hall / Stan Singh – Mixed Doubles (Doubles was the theme with double-winners Jamie Herman, Stan Singh, and Mary Hall! 🙂 I would like to thank the RA Centre and Crosscourt Tennis Centre for the use of their facilities. Thanks to Black Knight and Ping-Pong Depot for providing gear. Thanks to Horatio Pintea for procuring the TT tables. And a big thanks to those who helped me behind the desk, so I could enjoy a few matches myself! See you next time! Steve Mikovich – tournament organizer
